"It's ALL in her head."

With a BA and an MA in English, Black Lily has used her extensive language skills and training to service a diverse spectrum of clients. Composing  press releases for noteable corporations, creating original marketing and webpage copy for small businesses and contributing short stories and poetry to several anthologies.  Oh yeah, and she has also sribbled out a whole lotta fashion and beauty copy for girly magazines!  Whether you're looking for ultra conservative, sleek and modern, or totally outrageous over-the-top material, Black Lily can customize and deliver the right "voice" for the job. Why?  Because "It's ALL in her head."

 PUBLISHED WORK

Mama loves her magazines.  She also loves to write stuff. Luckily, sometimes the people who print those lovely, glossy paged-thingys, allow me to share some of my scribbles with their readership.  Here are just a few examples:

HONEY is a  super hip, fashion-obsessed, edgy publication for a multi-cultural audience.  And, it's a magazine that really suits my independent, conversational and occasionally maverick voice (in other words, they let me cuss like a frat boy and don't get their pannies in a twist over it).  It started of as a print publication in the late 90's, went bye-bye, got back up and came back swinging in a super phresh digital format.  Buzz Buzz, baby.  I absolutely HEART writing for my sweet sweet HONEY BEES!

HEART & SOUL,  a health, fitness and lifestyle magazine geared towards a sophisticated and progressive, African American, female readership, published one of my earliest stories.  The article was a beauty/humor story entitled "These Braids Have Gotta Go!"

Russell Simmons' ONEWORLD Magazine (now out of print)was the very first major magazine to publish my work. I still have the check stub as a momento!  What?  You mean to tell me, I could think up some crazy *&#@!, write it down, send it out and some magazine would actually give ya girl MONEY for it?  WTF?  So cool. It seemed like magic to me, like I was spinning gold from the straw of my imagination - all Rapunzel-esque - or something. This was my very first lesson that the my thoughts could have actual monetary value, a lesson that I have held onto as I pursue a variety of creative writing endeavors.

VISION Magazine, described as "a catalyst for conscious living" isn't where you'd usually find a smart-mouthed, BLACK LILY" story, I'll grant you.  Alternative medicine, tofu and aromatherapy?  Ha!  Well, turns out my inner hippie chick ("MoonJava Sunbeam") occasionally likes to have her say and VISION Magazine has been so amazingly welcoming  and open (**thanks, Elyssa**) to this particular alter ego.  They have allowed me to bring my high heel and lipgloss sensibilities into this holistic, spirituality-focused space and the result is often a trip!

I started writing for CLUTCH in  of 2009 and have been a regular contributor ever since.  CLUTCH readers like their beauty, fashion, boy-talk and plenty of controversy. Readers aren't shy about giving their feedback and telling you what they do and don't like about a story. Thin-skinned writers will get their feelings hurt unless they understand that "mixing it up" is part and parcel of the CLUTCH game.  It's been a great kind of "writer's bootcamp" for me - because even when they don't like something about a story I've written, CLUTCHETTES definitely keeps me on my toes.

BUST Magazine is a bawdy, sassy, piss-yo'-pants funny publication aimed at third wave generation  feminists and the riot girl set (think Ms. Magazine meets Lady Gaga).  They published an early piece I wrote entitled, "A Sistah Trip" (about a vacation a friend and I took to Italy) in a fun travel issue.

From time to time, I'll contribute a poem or short story to an anthology.

"GREASE" is a very personal poem included in this anthology (HONEY HUSH! An Anthology of African American Women's Humor).  Although partly light and silly, it was also written as a tribute to the very powerful and complex connection between mothers and daughters.

*I kind of stumbled into writing business and marketing copy. Friends and associates who read my magazine work would often ask me to write brochures and web copy for their small businesses.   INDIGOFERA is a plant-based beauty and wellness company which offers  natural products for skin and hair. The founder and creator, Chanelle Washinton, engaged me to provide writing & editorial services to the company in 2009.
